Vietnamese Pot-Bellied Pig *

 : Sus scrufa

 : Mammal

 : Vietnam and Thailand

 : Plant material and grains

 : Weight 60 to 300 lbs.

: The Vietnamese government subsidizes farmers in Vietnam in efforts to help the breed to continue

These pigs are generally smaller than the average breeds that are raised for food and can be advantageous for hog farmers on smaller plots of land.  The typical sway back and low-hung “pot” belly are normal for this species, though being obese is not.  Here at our Zoo, we monitor our pigs closely and watch for signs of obesity which include fat rolls over their eyes and being able to easily feel the hip bones.
