American Marten *

 : Martes americana

 : Mammal

 : Mature, dense conifer, deciduous, and mixed conifer-hardwood forests.

 : Omnivorous, eating small mammals, seeds, nuts, and fruit.


 : Least Concern


• American martens live solitary lives. They typically avoid other martens outside of the breeding season. 

• Although they spend most of their time on land, American martens are excellent swimmers and can even dive underwater.

• They will dig tunnels under the snow to stay warm in the winter. 

Respect native wildlife by remembering that…it’s wild! When enjoying native land where wildlife lives, always be aware, be safe, and leave no trace. Never approach, taunt, or feed wildlife.
